Between Ourselves by JG Wilson

Editor's Note: The late Joe Wilson, a long-time Hammonton News managing editor and later news columnist, was a Hammonton institution. In his weekly column, Between Ourselves, which he wrote up until his death in the early '90s, was filled with tidbits, local trivia and history, and anecdotes about his hometown and its residents. And there always was something about the weather. The News has decided to reprint some of those columns, not only to reminisce, but also to allow folks who didn't know Joe to be introduced to his special hometown connection.

From The Hammonton News issue of 5/1/86

IN A RECENT story I focused on the old-time movie theaters in Hammonton and this called for a mention of the role of the piano player. I have since learned that Mrs. Elizabeth Lindsay Gardner, who played the piano at the old Palace as far back as 1912 is living in good health in her home on Central Avenue in Ancora.

Friday Mailbag & YouTube Roundup!

More suggested name changes for Steelers, carping about Tomlin's assistants, a request from a serviceman in Kuwait, a great video homage to the Jaw and a welcome to Mike Tomlin, plus a weekend YouTube treat for Steelers fans feeling wistful about last year ...

MORE STEELER NAME CHANGES:

"Brett Keisel to "Grizzly Adams" Keisel" -- Craig Johnston, South Side of Pittsburgh

"Bryant McFadePattern, an homage to the deep cover skills of our DB's.
Cedrick "The Complainer" Wilson, just because he always seems so full of joy.
Anthony "Don't EVER do that Deion high step crap again" Smith, -- nuff said." -- Steve Carlisle, San Antonio, TX, formerly of Hickory, PA

"I know you can't really print this, but Larry Footeupyer[rear] would be a good one! :-) I know he's now an ex-Steeler, but Duce should have just dropped the y to become Duce Stale.

Observe King's holiday

Last week, when most other states' lawmakers observed a holiday in honor of one of the most important civil rights leaders in our nation's history, members of the Utah Legislature convened the annual session. They did nothing wrong under the law by doing so. In fact, the state Constitution tells them when to get together each year.

The only problem is that the day mandated by the Constitution happens to correspond with a national holiday for the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It also falls on a day when we tell our children to stay home from school as part of the observance. Our banks are closed. There is no mail delivery. And city and county offices across the state are closed as well.

Know your role and shut up

Back in October I wrote "How to Become an MP." I described the developing contest between my current MP, The Heroic Dispenser of Hams, and his younger, slimmer, handsomer adversary, nicknamed Santie Claus. I explained that my MP was in big trouble this time around because Santie Claus was busy building his reputation as, well, a giver of gifts.

Well, since last we tuned in the chap's been busy. At Christmas he appeared with a DJ and foot soldiers giving out, what else, Christmas presents. He stood there like a game show host, smiling with a mic in his hand. He introduced himself while his elves gave out presents galore. Unfortunately, I was in my car at the time or I'd report on exactly what kind of gifts.

In any event, Elections looked like they would be fun back in October.
